Add page numbers to a PDF
Number the pages of a PDF as 1, Page 1, or Page 1 of 12, in the corner you choose. Skip the cover, start at any number. Free, no upload, runs in your browser.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
Three steps, and your file stays on your device the whole time.
- 1
Drop a PDF into the drop box
Or click to browse for it. Nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Pick where the number goes and how it reads
1, Page 1, or Page 1 of 12, in a corner or the center. Every page shows its number at once.
- 3
Click Save and download the numbered PDF
The number is drawn on top, so the text, links, and bookmarks stay as they were.
When to add page numbers to a PDF
A page number is how people point at a page and how they notice one is missing. These are the usual reasons to add them.
A report or a thesis to hand in
Many schools and offices ask for numbered pages. Put Page 1 of 12 at the bottom center, or a plain number in the corner the guidelines name.
A cover page without a number
Skip first pages leaves the cover or a table of contents bare, and the next page is numbered 1.
Files merged into one
Pages merged from several files have no numbering that runs through them. Number the merged PDF and they count from the first page to the last.
Printed pages that must stay in order
Handouts, manuals, and meeting packs go back together by their numbers, and Page 3 of 12 shows at a glance when a page is missing.
One chapter of a longer book
Start at picks the first number, so a chapter saved as its own PDF can begin at 45 and carry on where the one before it ended.

Page numbers, answered
Your files stay privateIs my file uploaded anywhere?+
No. Your PDF is read from your device and the numbers are drawn by your browser. It never leaves your computer or phone.
Is it free to add page numbers here?+
Yes. There is no watermark, no file limit, and no account. The work happens in your browser, so there is nothing for us to charge for.
Can I skip the cover page?+
Yes. Set Skip first pages to 1 and numbering starts on the second page as 1. Skip more for a table of contents, or type any range such as 3-10, 15.
Can numbering start at a number other than 1?+
Yes. Set Start at to the first number you want. It helps when the PDF is one chapter of a longer document.
What does the total count in Page 1 of 12?+
The total is the last number used. If you skip a cover in a 12 page file, the pages read 1 of 11 to 11 of 11.
Does it change anything else in my PDF?+
No. The number is drawn on top of each page. Text, images, links, and bookmarks stay exactly as they were, and the file barely grows because only standard fonts are used.
What about rotated or cropped pages?+
The number goes where you see it. On a page stored sideways it still lands at the bottom as you read it, and on a cropped page it stays inside the visible area.
Can I number a password protected PDF?+
Yes, if you know the password. Type it when the file is added. Tick Keep the password before saving and the numbered PDF opens with the same one.
Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?+
Yes. It runs in any current browser, Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox, on a computer, a phone, or a tablet. There is nothing to install and no account to make.
Is there a file size limit?+
No. There is no set limit and no daily cap. Your own device does the work, and files of a few hundred megabytes are fine on a laptop.
