How to edit or remove PDF metadata

Three steps, and your file stays on your device the whole time.

  1. 1

Drop a PDF into the drop box

Or click to browse for it. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2

Change the properties, or clear them all

Title, author, subject, keywords, and dates. A field left empty is removed from the file.

  3. 3

Click Save and download the PDF

Only the properties are rewritten. The pages stay exactly as they were.

When to edit PDF metadata

A PDF carries a few lines about itself that most people never see. These are the usual reasons to look, and to change them.

Your name out of a file you send

A PDF exported from Word often names the person whose computer it was written on, and their company. Clear all takes that out before the file leaves you.

See what a file says about itself

The app it was written in, the software that made the PDF, and when it was created and changed, all in one place. Nothing changes until you save.

A proper title in the browser tab

Chrome and Firefox show a PDF's title in the tab when it has one. Set it, and the tab says Q3 report instead of Document1.

Files for a website or an archive

Search engines and document systems read the title, subject, and keywords. Fill them in so the file is found by what it is about.

The dates of the original

A scan of an old record says it was made the day it was scanned. Set the created date to the original's, picked from a calendar.

PDF metadata, answered

Is my file uploaded anywhere?+

No. Your PDF is read and rewritten by your browser. It never leaves your computer or phone, which is the point of a tool like this one.

Is it free to edit PDF metadata here?+

Yes. There is no watermark, no file limit, and no account. The work happens in your browser, so there is nothing for us to charge for.

What is PDF metadata?+

It is the information a PDF carries about itself: a title, an author, a subject, keywords, the application it was written in, the software that made the PDF, and when it was created and last changed. Readers show it under File, Properties. Search engines and document systems read it too.

Why would I remove it?+

Because it can say more than you meant to send. A PDF exported from Word often names the person whose computer it was written on, their company, and the day it was made. Clearing the properties before you share the file takes that out.

Does it remove everything?+

It removes the document's properties and its XMP packet, the second copy of the same information most PDFs carry, and the old copies are deleted from the file, not only hidden.

Will the pages change?+

No. Text, images, links, bookmarks, and form fields stay exactly as they were. Only the properties are rewritten.

Why is the PDF producer empty after saving?+

Most tools put their own name there when they save a file. This one does not: what you see in the form is what the file will say, and an empty field stays empty.

Can I edit a password protected PDF?+

Yes, if you know the password. Type it when the file is added. Tick Keep the password before saving and the new PDF opens with the same one.

Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?+

Yes. It runs in any current browser, Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox, on a computer, a phone, or a tablet. There is nothing to install and no account to make.

Is there a file size limit?+

No. There is no set limit and no daily cap. Your own device does the work, and files of a few hundred megabytes are fine on a laptop.
