How to delete annotations from a PDF

Three steps, and your file stays on your device the whole time.

  1. 1

Drop a PDF into the drop box

Or click to browse for it. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2

Check the kinds of annotation to remove

Comments, highlights, drawings, and stamps start checked. Each page shows how many will go.

  3. 3

Click Save and download the clean PDF

The annotations are deleted from the file, not only hidden. The pages stay as they were.

When to delete annotations from a PDF

Comments and markup are for the people working on a file, not the people it goes to. These are the usual reasons to take them off.

A clean copy to send

Take out the review comments before a contract, a paper, or a report goes to someone outside the team.

Notes never meant to be read

A sticky note or a typed comment can hold the frank version. Its text is deleted from the file, so no program can bring it back.

A marked up handout or textbook

Highlights, underlines, and pen drawings added in a reader come off, and the pages are as they were before anyone marked them.

An old Approved stamp

Stamps such as Approved or Draft are annotations too. Remove them so a new version does not carry an old sign off.

A form that still works

Links and form fields are kept unless you check them, so the document still works once the markup is gone.

No catch

Clean as many PDFs as you like

A few comments or hundreds of highlights. There is no daily limit and nothing to sign up for, and your file stays on your computer or phone.

Deleting annotations, answered

Is my file uploaded anywhere?+

No. Your PDF is read and rewritten by your browser. It never leaves your computer or phone.

Is it free to remove annotations from a PDF here?+

Yes. There is no watermark, no file limit, and no account. The work happens in your browser, so there is nothing for us to charge for.

What counts as an annotation?+

Anything added on top of the page rather than written into it: sticky notes and typed comments, highlights, underlines and strikeouts, pen drawings and shapes, stamps such as Approved, and attached files. Links and form fields are annotations too, in the file's own terms.

Why are links and form fields kept?+

They are part of how the document works, not marks someone left on it. Removing the links from a report or the fields from a form is rarely what anyone wants, so they stay unless you check them.

Is the comment text really gone?+

Yes. The comments are deleted from the file, not only hidden, and so are their pop up notes and any older copies an earlier edit left behind. Someone opening the saved PDF in any program will not find them.

Will the text and pictures on the pages change?+

No. Only what was added on top is removed. The page itself, its text, images, and layout, stays exactly as it was.

Can I keep how the comments look but stop them being edited?+

That is flattening, a different job: it paints each annotation into the page, so it looks the same and can no longer be moved or deleted. This tool removes annotations instead.

Can I clean a password protected PDF?+

Yes, if you know the password. Type it when the file is added. Tick Keep the password before saving and the clean PDF opens with the same one.

Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?+

Yes. It runs in any current browser, Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox, on a computer, a phone, or a tablet. There is nothing to install and no account to make.

Is there a file size limit?+

No. There is no set limit and no daily cap. Your own device does the work, and files of a few hundred megabytes are fine on a laptop.
