Unlock a PDF
Remove the password from a PDF you can open, and lift its restrictions on printing, copying, and changes. Free, no upload, runs in your browser.
How to remove a password from a PDF
Three steps, and neither your file nor your password leaves your device.
- 1
Drop a PDF into the drop box
Or click to browse for it. Nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Type its password once
A file with only restrictions opens without asking, and they are lifted as it is.
- 3
Click Unlock PDF and download it
The copy opens without a password, with printing and copying allowed.
When to unlock a PDF
A password that made sense when the file was sent can get in the way later. These are the usual ones.
A statement you open again and again
Banks and payroll often send PDFs that ask for a date of birth or an account number every time. Type it once and keep a copy that opens straight away.
A portal that turns down protected files
Many upload forms reject a PDF with a password, or show it blank. An unlocked copy goes through like any other PDF.
A file that will not print
Some PDFs open freely but ask readers not to print them. Those restrictions are lifted without asking for anything, and the copy prints anywhere.
Text you cannot copy
When selecting text does nothing, the file usually asks readers not to allow copying. The unlocked copy lets you copy and quote it.
Your own files, kept somewhere safe
Old files you protected yourself, now stored on an encrypted drive or in a password manager. Unlock them once and stop typing the password.
No catch

Unlocking a PDF, answered
Your files stay privateIs my file or my password uploaded anywhere?+
No. Your browser decrypts the PDF on your own computer or phone. Neither the file nor the password is sent anywhere, and the password is not saved.
Is it free to unlock a PDF here?+
Yes. There is no watermark, no file limit, and no account. The work happens in your browser, so there is nothing for us to charge for.
Do I need to know the password?+
Yes, if the file asks for one before it opens. This page does not guess or crack passwords: it takes the password you type once and saves a copy that no longer asks for it.
What are restrictions?+
Some PDFs open for anyone but ask the reader not to allow printing, copying text, or changes. Those files need no password here: the restrictions are lifted and the copy works like any other PDF.
Will the pages change?+
No. Text, images, links, bookmarks, and form fields stay exactly as they were. Only the encryption is removed.
Can I remove a password from a PDF that is not mine?+
Only unlock files you are allowed to. The password is there because someone wanted it there, and this page only works if you already know it.
Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?+
Yes. It runs in any current browser, Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox, on a computer, a phone, or a tablet. There is nothing to install and no account to make.
Is there a file size limit?+
No. There is no set limit and no daily cap. Your own device does the work, and files of a few hundred megabytes are fine on a laptop.
